The President of the Council, Jaume Ferrer, the Sports Councillor, Jordi Vidal, and Manuel Hernández, director of Unisport Consulting, the company organising the race, have made the presentation today of the XI Illa de Formentera Popular Half Marathon and 8th8KM race which will be held next Saturday the 11thof May in Formentera. Also attending were representatives of the main sponsoring companies of the event, the Director of Caixabank in the Balearics, Maria Cruz, and the Director of Marketing of Trasmapi, Nuria de la Torre.

3,200 runners will come together next Saturday in Formentera. 2,200 taking part in the Half Marathon, and 1,100 in the 8KM. The start of the Half Marathon will be at 5.30 p.m. from the Lighthouse of La Mola and the 8KM will be at the same time, but for the first time, this year will start from the junction of Ca Marí with the Sant Ferran road (not from Sant Ferran village), in order to “improve the safety of the runners”, as Manuel Hernández explained.

This year’s race had a pre-registration of 6,000 people, but the organiser reminded us that for some years now a maximum number of participants has been set to ensure the satisfaction of the runners and to adjust to the size of the island.

XI edition

The President of the Council of Formentera recalled that 11 years ago this race was first organised which now “has established itself and enables sport to be done in Formentera, and covering the island from end to end from the lighthouse of La Mola to that of La Savina, in an incomparable setting”. Moreover, the President emphasised that events like this one attract visitors in off-peak months, such as May.

The Sports Councillor thanked all the collaborators, organisers, sponsors, security bodies and volunteers that will make this race possible and also those that over the years have collaborated to achieve placing this sporting event in Formentera on the national calendar. The councillor also gave his “apologies for the inconveniences that may be caused to the residents of Formentera for the road closures”.

Road closures

At 4.45 the road that links La Savina-Es Pujols- Sant Ferran and Sant Ferran-La Mola will be closed. These roads will gradually be opened by segment on the passing of the last runner, until 8 p.m. when the flow of traffic will be totally restored.

At 3 p.m. the road that joins Pilar de la Mola (town) with the lighthouse of La Mola will be closed. It will reopen to traffic at 5.45 p.m. when the last runner should pass. We remind you that the road that joins La Savina-Sant Francesc-Sant Ferran will not be affected.

The prize-giving ceremony is planned for 7 p.m. in the Passeig de la Marina (Port of La Savina), next to the finishing line.
