Formentera will host 3000 runners in its 10th Half Marathon

The President of Formentera Council, Jaume Ferrer and the councillor for Sport, Jordi Vidal, have today presented the 10th Popular Half Marathon Illa de Formentera. Also attending the presentation have been representatives of the race’s main sponsors, Alejandro Marí, for Trasmapi, and Josep Verdera, for CaixaBank, as well as Manuel Hernández, director of Unisportconsulting, the organising company of the race.

The Half Marathon, which will be held on Saturday the 12th of May, will have the participation of 3000 runners, 2000 in the half marathon and 1000 in the 8 km race.

This has been the second year that registrations have been decided by draw, since more that 7000 athletes applied to compete in the race. The organisers calculate that between runners and companions, some 7500 people will come to Formentera for this sporting event.

Extra security

To ensure the security of the race, there will be local police reinforcements from Santa Eulària and Sant Antoni “who will give support to the forces we have ready in Formentera this Saturday”, stated the councillor for Sport Jordi Vidal, who also announced that it will receive help from the civil protection groups of Sant Antoni and Sant Josep, “which will ensure that the race can take place with total security for the participants”, highlighted Vidal, who thanked the councils and Ibizan associations for their goodwill.

The President of Formentera Council, Jaume Ferrer, recalled that the first Half Marathon of Formentera took place 10 years ago with 101 participants and pointed out the excellent evolution experienced in this decade. He also thanked the involvement of everyone for making this race possible and especially the volunteers, “who have achieved, with their efforts, that this competition is one of the most appreciated by runners from the islands, the state and beyond our frontiers”.

Times and road closures

The race, of 21 kilometres, will start at 17.30 h from the Far de la Mola, and the 8 km race will start at the same time from km 6.2 of the Sant Ferran road.

The road that connects the Pilar de la Mola with the Far will be closed as from 15.00 h, that which joins Es Caló with la Mola will be closed as from 16.30 h, that from Sant Ferran to Es Caló as from 17.00 h, and that from La Savina to Es Pujols and Sant Ferran will also be closed as from 17.00 h. The roads will be reopened when the last participants in the race pass by. It is estimated that the last runners will arrive from between 19.30 and 20.00 h at the finishing line, located in the port of La Savina.

The participants who make their own way to El Far can leave their vehicle in the Pilar de La Mola, in a special car park for the event and walk 2 km on foot. From the finishing line there will be a service to return to the car park. Only the organisation’s buses and cars will have access to El Far.

Anniversary concert

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Half Marathon, a free concert has been scheduled featuring “Los Mojinos Escocios” in the Plaça Europa in Es Pujols as from 23.30 h. The participants who want to enjoy the music and party of the Mojinos and spend the night in Ibiza will have a special boat back that will leave La Savina at 02.00 h in the morning, as well as a bus line to travel between La Savina and Es Pujols.

Bus service Mojinos Escozíos

So that everyone can get to the free concert of the Escozidos Mojinos; on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the Half Marathon of Formentera, in Es Pujols; There will be some coaches that will serve the entire island with different routes and stops.

Check the stops and forget about the car, safer and more practical. Ticket going 4 euros, round trip 6 euros.

Preparing the race

On the 10th of May a coordinating meeting was held between all the parties involved in the safety of the race. The Formentera Council, the Local Police, the Civil Guard, Civil Protection, transfer operators and the organisers met to set into motion the safety procedures for all the race.
