The president of the Consell, Ana Juan; the Vice President and Minister of Tourism, Alejandra Ferrer, and the Minister of Sports, Paula Ferrer, today presented the XIII Formentera Mitja Marató and the IX 8 km Sant Ferran-la Savina, which will be held this Saturday, May 14, in the island. In total, both tests bring together more than 3,700 athletes from different countries and points of the national geography. The presentation was also attended by the director of Unisport Consulting, Manuel Hernández, the event’s organizing company; the Trasmapi marketing manager, Nuria de la Torre, and the director of the Caixabank area in the Pitiusas, Gaelle Ledour, main sponsors of the race.

Ana Juan has underlined that “Formentera is ready and excited to receive the largest test of the extensive sports calendar and events that the island offers in spring”. Juan has highlighted that this year there are changes to the start: “The Mitja Marató is a race to enjoy sport and this privileged environment that is Formentera, and for all of us it is important that the race is respectful with the environment; thus, This year the entertainment tent at the Mola exit has been moved, to respect the habitat of the virot and, also like last year, the test will be free of disposable plastics”.

On the other hand, Alejandra Ferrer recalled “the appeal of this competition which, in addition to touring the island from end to end, is an ideal opportunity for the participants and their companions to enjoy Formentera in the month of May, its nature, culture and gastronomy”.

Sports spring in Formentera

For her part, Paula Ferrer has been “very satisfied because the island is showing that we can organize events of international relevance in different sports, such as sailing, judo, chess, cycling or, now, athletics… with the participation of more than six thousand people between all the tests”. The Minister of Sports has also thanked “the work of the volunteers, security forces, civil protection and the health teams that make this competition possible”.

Finally, Manuel Hernández, has highlighted that “the test has practically covered the quota of participants, one more example of its relevance and consolidation in the national and international calendar”.

Savings of 22,500 plastic bottles

As was done in 2021, in this edition a reusable can will be given to all participants at the finish line, which they can fill with water or soft drinks whenever they want. In addition, at the different refreshment points of the races, all the containers will be reusable. This will save up to 22,500 plastic bottles in one day.

Ecopilas will also be present again encouraging the recycling of batteries and, this year, in collaboration with the Consell de Formentera and the Government of the Balearic Islands, an activity will be carried out in schools on the island to raise awareness among the youngest about the importance of recycling a highly polluting material.

The start of the two tests will be at 5:30 p.m., the Mitja Marató, as usual, from the Mola lighthouse; and the 8 km one, from Sant Ferran.

ING Plastic Free

As we did in 2021, this year we continue to say no to single-use plastic packaging. To do this, at the finish line all participants will be given a reusable bottle of the race, which they can fill with water or soft drinks whenever they want. In addition, all cups in the different refreshment stations of the two races will be reusable. This will save up to 22.500 plastic bottles in one day. Collaborating is the easiest way to change the world and we will do it.

As in previous editions, Ecopilas will once again join us in the 1/2 Marathon of Formentera spreading its commitment to the collection of batteries and will have a detail with all those who on the day of the race deposit used batteries in the stand located next to the bib number pickup tent, located at the finish line in La Savina. In addition, in collaboration with the Consell de Formentera and the Govern de les Illes Balears, an activity will also be carried out in the schools of the island to raise awareness among the youngsters about the importance of recycling a highly polluting material. Ecopilas will also give a suitcase to the winners (male and female) of both the Half Marathon and the 8km race.

Changes in the start line to respect the habitat of the Balearic shearwater in La Mola

La Mola Virot

Participating in the 1/2 Marathon of Formentera also means being aware of the protection of the privileged environment in which the race is held and the planet in general. Therefore, this year we have relocated the animation tent of the starting line in the Lighthouse of La Mola, to place it 500 meters before the real starting line.

In this way, we preserve a geographical space currently cataloged as a Natural Area of Special Interest (ANEI in Spanish) and we reduce the acoustic impact on the natural habitat of the Balearic shearwater an endemic species of the Balearic Islands, which only breeds on our islands and that in this area of Formentera has one of the most important colonies.

Thus, the buses will transfer the participants to the animation tent, where there will be a DJ to liven up the waiting time and free water and coffee service, and the 500 meters to the starting arch will remain as a warm-up area for runners. Only by protecting our environment will we be able to enjoy it more. Thank you all for your collaboration.

Participating in the 1/2 Marathon of Formentera also means being a participant in the #SavePosidoniaProject, a project that is born from the desire of the Consell Insular de Formentera to promote sustainable tourism and launch an action plan to raise funds that will go, exclusively, to the conservation of the marine plant Posidonia Oceánica. The objective is to raise awareness about the vital importance of Posidonia in Formentera in the present and, above all, for future generations.
