The president of the Consell, Ana Juan; the Vice President and Minister of Tourism, Alejandra Ferrer, and the Minister of Sports, Paula Ferrer, today presented the XIII Formentera Mitja Marató and the IX 8 km Sant Ferran-la Savina, which will be held this Saturday, May 14, in the island. In total, both tests bring together more than 3,700 athletes from different countries and points of the national geography. The presentation was also attended by the director of Unisport Consulting, Manuel Hernández, the event’s organizing company; the Trasmapi marketing manager, Nuria de la Torre, and the director of the Caixabank area in the Pitiusas, Gaelle Ledour, main sponsors of the race.

Ana Juan has underlined that “Formentera is ready and excited to receive the largest test of the extensive sports calendar and events that the island offers in spring”. Juan has highlighted that this year there are changes to the start: “The Mitja Marató is a race to enjoy sport and this privileged environment that is Formentera, and for all of us it is important that the race is respectful with the environment; thus, This year the entertainment tent at the Mola exit has been moved, to respect the habitat of the virot and, also like last year, the test will be free of disposable plastics”.

On the other hand, Alejandra Ferrer recalled “the appeal of this competition which, in addition to touring the island from end to end, is an ideal opportunity for the participants and their companions to enjoy Formentera in the month of May, its nature, culture and gastronomy”.

For her part, Paula Ferrer has been “very satisfied because the island is showing that we can organize events of international relevance in different sports, such as sailing, judo, chess, cycling or, now, athletics… with the participation of more than six thousand people between all the tests”. The Minister of Sports has also thanked “the work of the volunteers, security forces, civil protection and the health teams that make this competition possible”.

Finally, Manuel Hernández, has highlighted that “the test has practically covered the quota of participants, one more example of its relevance and consolidation in the national and international calendar”.

Savings of 22,500 plastic bottles

As was done in 2021, in this edition a reusable can will be given to all participants at the finish line, which they can fill with water or soft drinks whenever they want. In addition, at the different refreshment points of the races, all the containers will be reusable. This will save up to 22,500 plastic bottles in one day.

Ecopilas will also be present again encouraging the recycling of batteries and, this year, in collaboration with the Consell de Formentera and the Government of the Balearic Islands, an activity will be carried out in schools on the island to raise awareness among the youngest about the importance of recycling a highly polluting material.

The start of the two tests will be at 5:30 p.m., the Mitja Marató, as usual, from the Mola lighthouse; and the 8 km one, from Sant Ferran.
